Friendship Reflection The Lord’s Day
June 14, 2026
Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Scripture
First Reading — Exodus 19:2–6a
The Israelites arrived at Mount Sinai, where God reminded them of His faithful love:
“You have seen how I treated the Egyptians and how I bore you up on eagle wings and brought you here to myself.”
The Lord invited them into a covenant relationship:
“You shall be my special possession... a kingdom of priests, a holy nation.”
Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 100
“We are his people: the sheep of his flock.”
The psalm joyfully proclaims that we belong to the Lord who made us and lovingly cares for us.
Second Reading — Romans 5:6–11
Saint Paul reminds us of the depth of God's love:
“But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.”
Through Jesus, we have been reconciled to God and brought into friendship with Him.
Gospel — Matthew 9:36—10:8
Seeing the crowds, Jesus was moved with compassion because:
“They were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd.”
He said:
“The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few.”
Jesus then called the Twelve Apostles by name and sent them out to proclaim:
“The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
He instructed them:
“Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”
Reflection — Called by Name, Sent as Friends
One of the most beautiful truths of the Christian life is this:
Jesus does not merely save us. He calls us into friendship and mission.
In the Gospel, Jesus looks upon the crowds with compassion. He sees their confusion, their weariness, and their longing for hope. He does not turn away.
Then He does something remarkable.
He calls ordinary people by name.
Peter.
Andrew.
James.
John.
Matthew.
Thomas.
Men with strengths and weaknesses.
Men who misunderstood Him.
Men who would sometimes fail Him.
Yet Jesus chose them.
He called them friends and entrusted them with His mission.
The same Jesus looks upon us today.
He sees our fears, limitations, and doubts. He knows our past and understands our struggles. Yet He continues to call us by name.
Friendship with Jesus is never meant to stop with personal consolation. Those who experience His love become instruments of His compassion.
Parents become missionaries within their homes.
Grandparents become witnesses of faithful endurance.
Friends become encouragers.
Neighbors become bearers of hope.
None of us are asked to do everything.
But each of us is asked to give what we have received.
Saint Paul reminds us that Christ loved us while we were still sinners. We did not earn His friendship. It was freely given.
And now Jesus says:
"Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give."
The world does not need perfect disciples.
It needs friends of Jesus who are willing to say:
"Here I am, Lord. Send me."
Prayer
Jesus, my Lord and my Friend,
Thank You for seeing me, knowing me, and calling me by name.
When I feel inadequate, remind me that Your grace is enough.
Fill my heart with Your compassion for those who are troubled, lonely, and searching for hope.
Help me to share freely the love, mercy, and encouragement that I have received from You.
Send me into this new week as an instrument of Your friendship.
Amen.
Intercessions
Jesus, Friend and Shepherd of our souls, hear us.
For the Church, that she may courageously proclaim the Gospel with compassion and joy.
For priests, missionaries, catechists, and all who serve God's people, that they may remain faithful to their calling.
For those who feel lost, abandoned, or burdened, that they may encounter the healing presence of Christ.
For families, that they may become schools of prayer, forgiveness, and friendship.
For all Friends of Jesus, that we may respond generously to the mission entrusted to us.
Friendship Challenge
This week, intentionally reach out to one person who may be feeling lonely, discouraged, or overlooked.
Offer a phone call, a visit, a message, or a prayer.
Be an instrument of Jesus' compassion.
Journal Prompt
How is Jesus calling me by name at this season of my life, and where might He be sending me to share His friendship with others?
Saint’s Note
The saints remind us that mission begins with friendship. Before they preached, taught, or served, they first allowed themselves to be loved by Christ. The same invitation is extended to each of us today: to remain close to Jesus and to bring His friendship to the world.
Sending Forth
Go forth this week knowing that you have been carried on eagle's wings, reconciled through Christ, and called by name.
The harvest remains abundant.
Walk with Jesus.
Share His compassion.
And be a friend of Jesus and a friend to all His friends.
