Scripture

First Reading — Jeremiah 20:10–13

The prophet Jeremiah experiences rejection, ridicule, and opposition. Even some of his former friends watch for his downfall.

Yet he proclaims with confidence:

“But the LORD is with me, like a mighty champion.”

Despite his suffering, Jeremiah entrusts his cause to God and praises Him for His faithfulness.

Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 69

“Lord, in your great love, answer me.”

The psalmist cries out amid rejection and suffering, trusting that God's love is greater than every trial.

Second Reading — Romans 5:12–15

Saint Paul contrasts Adam and Christ.

Through Adam, sin entered the world.

Through Jesus Christ, grace entered the world in abundance.

“For if by the transgression of the one the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ overflow for the many.”

Gospel — Matthew 10:26–33

Jesus tells His disciples:

“Do not be afraid.”

He reminds them that the Father knows even the smallest details of their lives:

“Even all the hairs of your head are counted.”

And He assures them:

“You are worth more than many sparrows.”

Reflection — Friendship Without Fear

One of the most repeated commands in Scripture is simple:

“Do not be afraid.”

Jesus knows how easily fear enters our lives.

We fear illness.

We fear loss.

We fear rejection.

We fear failure.

We fear what may happen to those we love.

The prophet Jeremiah knew these fears well. He experienced betrayal, ridicule, and loneliness. Even friends turned against him. Yet in the midst of his struggles he made a remarkable profession of faith:

“The Lord is with me, like a mighty champion.”

Friendship with Jesus does not guarantee an easy life.

It guarantees that we never face life alone.

The Gospel reveals a deeply personal God.

Jesus does not speak of a distant Creator who merely observes from heaven. He speaks of a loving Father who notices every sparrow and counts every hair on our heads.

Nothing about your life is insignificant to Him.

Not your worries.

Not your tears.

Not your prayers.

Not your hopes.

Not even the struggles you have never shared with another person.

A true friendship grows through trust.

The more we trust Jesus, the less power fear has over us.

This does not mean that fear disappears instantly. Rather, it means that when fear comes, we know where to turn.

We turn toward our Friend.

The One who conquered sin and death.

The One whose grace is greater than every failure.

The One who promises:

“Do not be afraid.”

Today, Jesus invites us to place our fears into His hands and walk forward with confidence.

His friendship is stronger than whatever we face.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,

You know the fears I carry in my heart.

You know the worries I speak aloud and those I keep hidden.

Thank You for remaining close to me in every circumstance.

Help me to trust Your love more deeply.

When I am discouraged, remind me that You are my strength.

When I am afraid, remind me that I am never alone.

May Your friendship give me courage, peace, and hope.

Amen.

Intercessions

Jesus, our faithful Friend, hear our prayer.

  • For the Church, that she may proclaim the Gospel with courage and joy.

  • For those who suffer persecution or rejection because of their faith, that God may strengthen them.

  • For those burdened by anxiety, fear, or uncertainty, that Christ may grant them peace.

  • For families facing difficulties, that they may trust in God's loving care.

  • For all Friends of Jesus, that we may grow in confidence and trust in His presence.

Friendship Challenge

Whenever fear or worry arises today, pause and pray:

“Jesus, my Friend, I place this in Your hands.”

Repeat it as often as needed throughout the day.

Journal Prompt

What fear most often occupies my heart these days? How might Jesus be inviting me to trust His friendship more completely in that area of my life?

Saint’s Note

Saint Aloysius Gonzaga

Today the Church celebrates Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, patron saint of youth and students. Though born into wealth and privilege, he chose a life dedicated entirely to Christ. His purity of heart, devotion to prayer, and service to the sick remind us that true greatness is found in loving God above all things.

Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, pray for us.

Sending Forth

Go forth today without fear.

The Lord who calls you His friend walks beside you.

Trust His love.

Rely on His grace.

And wherever you go, let others encounter the peace that comes from knowing they are deeply loved by God.

Friendship with Jesus Thought for the Day

“You are worth more than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:31)

A Friend of Jesus can face the future with confidence because he knows he is loved, known, and never forgotten.
